Student's report 2 (DIA2016)

From June 26 to June 30, 2016, DIA2016 annual meeting was held in Philadelphia, PA, and my poster presentation was on June 27. I also listened to some oral presentations.

There are two things that I felt very impressed at the time of my presentation.

One was the words from a person who works in a pharmaceutical company developing diabetic drugs. He said that our research was interesting. I realized, again, that our research has a certain stimulating effect on a pharmaceutical industry. It was delightful for me to receive a positive feedback from a person in the pharmaceutical industry, and I was very motivated to continue this research.

The other was a question I have received from another person about my presentation. The question was “Why the FDA guidance has a stronger effect on the antidiabetic drug development of the other countries than other factors?” Although such a question already came up in our laboratory meeting, I was actually surprised to get a similar question at first look. Thus, I should work on this question as soon as possible because we will be surely asked the same question when we want to publish our research in a journal.

One of the most interesting oral presentations is “China’s Regulatory Reform and its Impact”. I learned that there were some systems similar to the US systems of IND and NDA in the Chinese regulatory framework of drug development. From this experience, I recognized the importance of listening to the presentations of various subjects, even not directly related to my research subject. For that purpose, I would like to attend various kinds of seminars and conferences in order to expand my knowledge.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Katsura Tsukamoto, Assistant Professor Naoki Matsumaru, and all laboratory members for supporting and providing me such a wonderful opportunity.

私は6月26日から6月30日までDIAの学会に参加しました。6月27日にはポスター発表を行い、我々の研究内容を、国外の学生や企業の方に見て頂きました。また、28日には企業や大学に所属している方の口頭発表を拝聴しました。

今回のポスター発表で印象に残っていることは、2つあります。

1つ目は製薬企業の方から言われた言葉です。糖尿病用薬開発に注力されている製薬企業の方が私のポスターをご覧になり、研究内容が興味深いと言ってくださいました。その言葉から、製薬企業の方が興味をもつ研究であるということを認識したと共に、研究を続けるモチベーションが非常に上がりました。

2つ目はある男性の方から尋ねられた質問です。その方は私に「多くの要因の中でなぜFDAガイダンスがこんなに他国の医薬品開発に影響を及ぼすのか」と質問されました。この点に関してはラボミーティングでも議題に挙がった内容でした。初めて我々の研究を見た方にこのことを指摘されるということは、論文を投稿する際も、指摘を受ける可能性が高いと考えます。したがって、早急に取り掛からなければいけない課題であると感じました。今後、「様々な要因の中でFDAガイダンスが他国の医薬品開発に与える影響」を客観的に評価するために尽力したいと考えます。

また、企業や大学に所属している方の口頭発表の中で特に印象的な内容は「China’s Regulatory Reform and its Impact」という演題の発表です。実際に拝見すると規制のインパクトを具体的に評価している発表ではありませんでしたので、自分の研究に活かすということは出来ませんでした。一方で、中国での医薬品開発の流れの中で、INDやNDAの制度があることを知りました。中国の臨床試験体制が米国と似ていることを学び、中国の医薬品開発について少し理解することが出来ました。今後も企業、医師、他大学の学生など様々な立場の方々が集う研究会に足を運び、自分の研究に関すること以外においても、さらに知識を深めていきたいと思います。

最後になりましたが、国際学会を通して、貴重な体験をさせて頂きました。このような機会を与えてくださり、参加にあたって御支援して下さった先生方、研究室メンバーに心より感謝申し上げます。
